Two things decide a release's vertical. Feeds that cover a single beat — the WHO newsroom, the European Central Bank press wire, a defense contractor's investor-relations page — declare their category in the registry, and every release they push inherits it. General wires carry everything, so those releases are classified on their own text: first the tag the publisher put in its own RSS, matched against a multilingual alias map, then a conservative keyword vote over headline and lede that only calls it when one category clears the field. Filing a release wrong is worse than leaving it unfiled.

Beats overlap, so a feed can declare up to two secondary verticals on top of its primary: the WHO wire files under health and international, CrowdStrike's releases under cybersecurity and finance. Category filters match either one, which is why press release categories here behave like tags rather than folders — one release, every beat it belongs to.

Sorting press releases by industry follows the subject, never the letterhead: a municipal or government notice lands where its content belongs — zoning under real estate, a road closure under construction — so a beat page carries the story rather than the publisher.
