From the Oncology Ward to the Yellow Footprints: Florida Poolee Overcomes Childhood Leukemia to Earn the Title
At just eight years old, David Lee Campbell began a grueling three year battle against leukemia at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, during which he survived a near-fatal treatment complication but vowed to one day join the military. Ten years later, after entering remission and rebuilding his strength in Florida, Campbell underwent a relentless one year administrative battle to secure a Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) medical waiver despite his extensive pediatric oncology history. Driven by a deep desire to honor his grandfather and push his own limits, the 18 year old successfully enlisted in the Marine Corps logistics field and is scheduled to ship out to Parris Island on November 17.
