Growing tomorrow’s environmental stewards at Wilson Lake
As the geographical center of America’s Heartland, the state of Kansas has three several distinct ecosystems, including the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie, Central Mixed-Grass Prairie, the Shortgrass Prairie, Woodlands and Aquatic Wetlands. All these ecosystems have distinct climates with varying plants and native wildlife. These habitats became the focus of an annual statewide competition where Kansas high and middle school students gathered at Wilson Lake in central Kansas for an event designed to turn environmental education into hands-on experience.
