Brig. Gen. Lear reflects on four decades of service to the Kentucky Army National Guard
After nearly four decades of service, Brig. Gen. Joe Lear reflects on a Kentucky Army National Guard career shaped by combat, leadership and the Soldiers he served alongside. From enlisting to help pay for college to commanding Soldiers in Iraq and ultimately serving as a general officer, Lear’s perspective on leadership evolved from personal performance to developing others. As he retires, Lear says the greatest measure of his service is not his rank or assignments, but the people he helped along the way and the lasting relationships he built with Soldiers across the Kentucky National Guard.
