Members of the Autonomous Vehicle Applications Promotion Working Group of the Transport Department (TD) today (October 10) visited the autonomous vehicle (AV) trial in Tung Chung, North Lantau. They took a ride in autonomous private cars, which ran steadily and smoothly throughout. Members were first briefed by the pilot proprietor on the trial's progress. The North Lantau trial was approved in February 2026 to extend the Airport Island trial routes to Tung Chung and Sunny Bay, commencing a cross-district trial. The number of AVs operating simultaneously was also increased and their operations have been smooth. In end-July, the trial was approved to introduce remote backup operators at the remote control centre to monitor the AVs in tandem with onboard backup operators, with a view to collecting more trial data. The trial has proceeded largely smoothly so far. Members then took the AVs in batches to pass through the vicinity of Tung Chung Town Centre safely and returned in an orderly manner. They were pleased to note the stable, safe and smooth performance of the AVs throughout the journey. A spokesman for the TD said, "This is the Working Group's first on-site visit to an AV trial
