Customs officers intercepted the incoming 23-year-old Mainland male passenger arriving in Hong Kong from Vientiane, Laos, via Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, at Hong Kong International Airport on August 19 and seized a total of about 126 200 duty-not-paid cigarettes, with an estimated market value of about $631,000 and a duty potential of about $417,000 from his personal baggage. The passenger was subsequently arrested. Customs welcomes the sentence. The custodial sentence has imposed a considerable deterrent effect and reflects the seriousness of the offences.
