Public consultation on EIA programme for Helen’s planned nuclear power plant begins
Helen Ydinvoima Oy is planning to build a nuclear power plant in Helsinki, either as a district heating plant in Salmisaari, Vuosaari or Norrberget, or as a combined heat and power plant in Vuosaari or Norrberget. The district heating plant would comprise up to 18 nuclear reactors with a combined thermal output of no more than 630 MW. Meanwhile, the combined heat and power plant would comprise a single nuclear reactor with a thermal output of no more than 1,400 MW. The nuclear power plant would require the construction of electricity and district heating transmission connections, cooling water system infrastructure and access roads to Helsinki, Vantaa and the Sipoo marine area. As regards the nuclear waste generated during plant operation, the project includes the processing and interim storage of spent nuclear fuel, as well as the processing, interim storage and final disposal of very low-level, low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste within the plant area. Views can be submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment by 4 January 2027 The EIA procedure applies to the planning of the project.
