This research, commissioned by the Department for the Economy and authored by Seán Byers of Trademark Belfast, provides an evidence base on the scale, economic contribution, challenges and future opportunities of the co-operative sector in the North The report estimates that the sector generates more than £1.7 billion in income and supports around 800,000 memberships. It identifies six recommended areas for action covering legislation, strategic policy development, support infrastructure, access to finance, education and awareness, and worker and community ownership. In response to the research, the Department will commence preparatory work on a 10-year social economy strategy, with co-operative development forming an important strand.
