LCQ10: Promoting mental health of young people
Following is a question by the Hon Duncan Chiu and a written reply by the Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, in the Legislative Council today (October 7): Question: According to data from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention of the University of Hong Kong, 15 cases of suicide among schoolchildren aged 15 or below were recorded in 2025, with the suicide rate for that age group rising from 0.9 per 100 000 population in 2024 to 2.9 in 2025. In addition, statistics from the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong indicate that the number of suicide cases among young people aged 0 to 19 rose to 47 in 2025, representing a significant year-on-year increase of 30 per cent and reaching a 10-year high. It has also been reported that at least eight cases of suicide and attempted suicide among schoolchildren were recorded in the first six days of the 2026 new school year, with the youngest victim being only 10 years of age.
