Confined Space Rescue in the NW
At approximately 8:40 a.m., Calgary Fire Department crews responded to a confined space rescue at a construction site in the 8000 block of 34 Avenue N.W. Upon arrival, firefighters located a construction worker who had fallen approximately 30 feet down a manhole at the site. Crews safely accessed the patient using air-monitoring equipment and initiated patient care, stabilizing the individual while preparing for removal. The Calgary Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team was dispatched and established a rope rescue system to safely extricate the worker from the confined space. Once stabilized and packaged for transport, the patient was successfully removed from the manhole using the rope rescue system. The patient's care was then transferred to Alberta Health Services, and the individual was transported to hospital in stable condition. Calgary Police Service also attended the scene to assist. As this incident involved a workplace injury, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) was notified and was enroute to investigate. The Calgary Fire Department would like to recognize the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies whose collaboration contributed to the successful rescue. -30-
