Government proposes new data centre register to improve situational awareness
The government proposal would provide for a data centre register, reporting obligations for data centres and the maintenance of situational awareness concerning them. The National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA) would act as the controller of the register, the supervisory authority and the authority responsible for receiving notifications. It would also maintain a situation picture. “A considerable number of new data centres will be built in Finland, and their share of the country’s electricity consumption is set to increase significantly. We need better information about the planned centres so that we can assess their impact on the electricity system and prices. Based on this information, we can then consider possible measures to manage the situation,” says Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto. Reporting obligation for data centres with a capacity of at least 0.5 MW The reporting obligation would apply to data centres with an installed IT power capacity of 0.5 megawatts (MW) or more. Buildings belonging to the same entity, along with any known extensions, would be added together. Registration would be voluntary for smaller data centres. Data centre operators would be required
