Walter Reed hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Fair, noting the disease impact on readiness
Noting the impact that breast cancer has on the military community, departments and services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) participated in a Breast Cancer Awareness Fair in the hospital’s outpatient building, America, on Oct. 14. Research has shown that active-duty women and veterans may face higher incidence rates for breast cancer, possibly attributed to some military occupations with increased exposures to carcinogens. Also, when breast cancer is caught early at a localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is over 99 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute, which is why early screening for the disease is important.
