Doris Miller Auditorium Designated City of Austin Historic Landmark by Austin City Council
The Doris Miller Auditorium at Rosewood Neighborhood Park, 2300 Rosewood Ave., was designated a historic landmark by Austin City Council on October 8, 2026. Noted for its architectural significance, community value, and historical associations, the Doris Miller Auditorium joins other properties under the stewardship of Austin Parks and Recreation with the City of Austin Historic Landmark status. Rosewood Neighborhood Park opened in 1929 as Austin's only segregated park serving African Americans. During World War II, Austin’s Recreation Department served as the community liaison for visiting Black service members, coordinating segregated recreation programs in line with military policy at the time. By 1942, the department began hosting weekly dances and sports for African American service members at Rosewood Park, one of the few recreational outlets available to them in Central Texas. Throughout 1943, thousands of service members and local Victory Hostesses attended dances, socials, and gatherings there, highlighting the need for additional space to support wartime leisure for Black troops.
