New exhibition marks 10 years of the Isle of Man's Biosphere

A new exhibition charting ten years of the Isle of Man's status as the world's first whole-nation UNESCO Biosphere has opened at the Manx Museum in Douglas. Ten curated objects and artefacts, from land and sea, bring the Island's Biosphere journey to life, illustrating that much of the Biosphere lies beneath the waves. The exhibition's title, Jeihosphere (jeih is Manx Gaelic for 10), nods to Blein ny Gaelgey, Year of the Manx Language. The collection draws on findings from the recently submitted UNESCO Periodic Review , which will help determine whether the status is renewed in summer 2027. Highlights include local produce, from Manx grown and ground flour to sea salt, celebrating the connection between nature, culture and enterprise; a honey jar and traditional woven 'bumbee' cage exploring the Island's disease-free bee population; ferns representing the slow recovery of its temperate rainforest habitats; and a trophy handed to farmer’s demonstrating innovation in sustainable practice. Since designation in 2016, a Biosphere's Partner Network has grown to nearly 400 organisations, including all state-run schools. A State of the Biosphere Report, translating the Periodic Review into
