Statement by President Meloni on the anniversary of the 7 October terrorist attacks

Three years ago, on 7 October 2023, the terrorist attacks by Hamas massacred men, women and children, targeted young people who had gathered to listen to music and tore innocent people away from their families, dragging them into captivity. Today, we remember the victims of that barbarity and extend our sympathies once again to their loved ones, to those who endured the horror of being held hostage and to the Israeli people. The time that has passed does not diminish the gravity of those crimes. No cause can justify the deliberate massacre of innocent people. Remembering this also means renewing our commitment against all forms of anti-Semitism. It is precisely in the name of protecting all civilians involved that we cannot remain indifferent to the dramatic and unacceptable suffering of the people of Gaza, nor to the escalating violence to which Palestinian civilians in the West Bank are being subjected. The spiral of violence must be broken. Italy will continue to work for a peace that guarantees security for Israelis and a future of freedom and dignity for Palestinians, with a view to two States living side by side within recognised borders.
