South Africa: Western Cape Agriculture celebrates 100 years of agricultural innovation at Langgewens Research Farm

Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, yesterday joined researchers, farmers, industry partners and departmental officials to celebrate the centenary of Langgewens Research Farm, marking 100 years of scientific excellence, agricultural innovation and farmer support in the Western Cape. The celebration commemorated the purchase of the farm by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture in 1926 as a centre for scientific experimentation and agricultural development. Over the past century, Langgewens has become one of South Africa’s leading dryland agricultural research facilities, making significant contributions to grain production, conservation agriculture, soil health and climate-resilient farming systems. During the event, Minister Meyer delivered the keynote address, unveiled the centenary plaque alongside Dr Mogale Sebopetsa, Head of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, and participated in the launch of the commemorative publication, A Century of Soil, Science and Seasons: 1926-2026. “Today we celebrate far more than a milestone in years.
