Electoral Commission gives similarly affected Political Parties same relief following Constitutional Court ruling Vuyelwa Fri, 10/16/2026 - 15:50 16 Oct 2026 The Electoral Commission has noted and accepted the Constitutional Court’s ruling and directive regarding the African National Congress (ANC) and the submission of its candidate lists for the 2026 Local Government Elections. The Constitutional Court order requires the Commission to include 181 ANC candidates (51 ward and 130 Proportional Representation) across six municipalities. The Commission has already put in place processes to give effect to this judicial injunction. The Commission holds constitutional obligations to ensure that all elections that it administers meet the high watermark for freeness and fairness. Part of that constitutional duty is even-handedness in the treatment of electoral contestants. The Commission recognises that thirty-two (32) other similar-situated parties intended to contest against the ANC. These 32 other parties intended to contest in 121 municipalities across the country.
