Nashville District commander honors team tackling Jackson Island flood cleanup
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District oversees a $34.5 million Hurricane Helene debris-removal mission on Jackson Island in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Primary contractor DRC Emergency Services LLC clears storm wreckage along the Nolichucky River, hauling vegetative debris to an inland facility where industrial grinders turn fallen timber into reusable farm mulch. During early operations, partner agencies and field crews respectfully located and recovered the remains of Nancy Tucker, bringing closure to her family and the local community. On-site archaeologists and safety specialists continuously monitor ground disturbance to protect buried historical artifacts and the surrounding Cherokee National Forest ecosystem. Daily operations remove hazardous materials and recyclable appliances to restore more than 80 acres of public riverfront safely.
