Investigation into Apollo Stadium site planning rules
An investigation has been launched into whether Christchurch planning rules are getting in the way of new housing, economic growth and the future redevelopment of the former Apollo Projects Stadium site, RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop says. The investigation follows a request from Christchurch City Council Mayor Phil Mauger to consider changes to the Christchurch District Plan for the 4.93-hectare site at 95 Jack Hinton Drive in Addington. “The temporary Apollo Stadium has served Christchurch well. Now that One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha is operating, it is important that the site can transition to a productive future,” Mr Bishop says. The regulation-making power under section 360I of the Resource Management Act enables the Minister Responsible for RMA Reform to remove or modify plan provisions where they are negatively affecting economic growth, development capacity or employment. “This is the same power that was used to investigate rules restricting Eden Park’s ability to host major events and support jobs and growth,” says Mr Bishop. “Planning rules must support cities to grow and adapt.
