Television interview - News 24 Scott Kimber Tue, 06/10/2026 - 09:36 MATT CUNNINGHAM, HOST: Minister, you’ve just come back from Port Hedland. What did you discover while you were over there? MALARNDIRRI McCARTHY, MINISTER FOR INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS: It was important to hear firsthand from the organisations and families as to how they’re going. It’s been really strong coverage in The Australian over the past month and a bit, and listening directly to the families was important, Matt. What I found, though, that was really concerning was the issue of food insecurity, which I found quite extraordinary in a place like Port Hedland, given you’ve got a massive mining community. This was a really strong issue that came through quite a number of times, in terms of the poverty and the kids and what’s happening with them. That was perhaps the first issue that was raised directly with me. HOST : So why are these kids not getting fed? MINISTER : Well, that’s the question, isn’t it? So, what I wanted to find out was what could we do in that regard? There are a number of factors, obviously.
